Growing Up Absurd: American Literature at Mid-Century

Growing Up Absurd: American Literature at Mid-Century

Dr David Hadar

In this lecture series, we will explore literary engagements with the experience of being a teenager and young adult in the 1950s and 60s, a time of unprecedented prosperity alongside existential anxiety and cultural dissatisfaction. We will concentrate on youth because this period was pivotal in how it conceived this concept. Some of the issues we will address are the rise of the concepts of the teenager, youth delinquency, the Beats, hippies, and rock and roll. Among others, we will read works by Paul Goodman (from whose book I take the title of the course), Norman Mailer, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Sylvia Plath, James Baldwin, Philip Roth, Joan Didion, and Grace Paley.
